Why We Don't Do Laundry Subscriptions (And What We Do Instead)

Why We Don't Do Laundry Subscriptions (And What We Do Instead)

If you've looked for wash and fold in Brooklyn lately, you've seen the plans: $X a month for "up to" so many pounds, a weekly pickup you're charged for whether or not you have anything to wash, a cancellation link buried somewhere in a settings menu.

We get asked fairly often whether Laundry on Keap has a subscription. We don't, and it's a deliberate choice. Here's the thinking.

Somebody always ends up on the wrong side of a plan

A laundry subscription is a guess about the future dressed up as a convenience.  The business is guessing you'll pay for weeks you don't need. You're guessing you'll fit more laundry into the plan than you paid for. One of you is wrong every month.

In practice it's usually the customer. You travel for a week and the charge goes through anyway. You have a light month and pay the full rate. You hit the pound limit and get charged overage at a price nobody mentioned up front. And if you do manage to come out ahead, hauling in 40 pounds every week on a 30-pound plan, the business quietly raises the price or tightens the limit, because they can't run at a loss either.

That's another high maintenance relationship with a monthly billing date no one asked for.

This is personal, honestly

I don't love opening a credit card statement and finding a subscription for one of my kids' apps that ran a few months past the point anyone was using it. It doesn't make me feel great about the company. And I really don't love calling in to ask for my money back and getting cycled through an AI assistant, then an overseas call center, then a menu maze that seems designed to make me give up on a credit for a service that wasnt used.

I don't want to run a business that makes anyone feel that way. When your laundry comes back from Laundry on Keap, I want the only feeling to be that it's cleaned to our high standard, it's folded neatly, and you paid a fair price for the value you received.

What we do instead: charge for what you actually wash

At Laundry on Keap, wash and fold is $1.65 per pound, washed, dried and folded, ready the next day. A typical 15-pound load runs about $25. Pickup and delivery across Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick is $7.49 each way, with a 10-pound minimum for in store dropoff & 20-pound minimum for delivery orders.

That's the whole price list for wash and fold. There's no plan to pick, no minimum number of months, and nothing charged in a week you don't use us. Need us every week? Great. Twice a year when the comforter needs doing?

We also know how much laundry needs swing from week to week. A light week, then a week with sheets, towels and a weeks worth of basketball gear. Paying per pound means the bill swings with your needs, instead of you paying a flat rate that only makes sense on the heavy weeks.

The cheapest way to use us

If you want the most cost-effective version of our wash and fold, it's this: drop off in person at 449 Keap St, as often as you like, with at least our 10-pound in-store minimum. You pay $1.65 a pound and nothing else. No delivery fees, no 20-pound delivery minimum. Pickup and delivery is there for the weeks you can't get to us; dropping off is the deal.

How we keep the price fair without a plan

Subscriptions exist partly because they smooth out a business's cash flow. We'd rather smooth it out by running a tight shop: good machines that get the load done in one cycle, a process that doesn't waste labor, and a team that has been doing this at 449 Keap Street since 2022. Efficiency is what lets us charge $1.65 and still fold your laundry properly, not a plan that charges you for the weeks you're away.

If you want a relationship with us, we'll meet you halfway

We do like regulars. So here's how it works:

  • Your first order is 10% off, whether you drop off in person or book a pickup. No code, no plan.
  • If you love it, set up recurring pickups (weekly, every two weeks, whatever fits) and every recurring order is 10% off. Skip a week whenever you like (cancel up to 2 hours before your scheduled pickup.) You're charged for the laundry we actually pick up, and nothing else. Pickup & Delivery only.

That gets you everything a subscription promises, a standing pickup day, a lower price, one less thing to think about, without the part where you pay for laundry that doesn't exist.

When a subscription might actually make sense

To be fair about it: if your laundry volume is identical every single week, you never travel, and the plan's per-pound rate works out lower than ours, a subscription could save you a few dollars. That's a narrow group. For most people in a one-bedroom who go away sometimes and have the occasional light week, paying per pound comes out ahead, and you never have to remember to cancel anything. Even then, consider pricing our service against the subscription.

Try it once, no strings

Drop off at 449 Keap St any day between 8 AM and 10 PM, or schedule a pickup and we'll be at your door, usually within the hour. Questions about pricing? Call us at (917) 909-1444 and a person picks up, likely from a noisy store or gymnastics practice.
